Getting a Car
Kea is small but its beaches, villages, and viewpoints are spread across hilly terrain. A car makes the difference between a full holiday and being stuck near the port.
Rental cars sell out in peak summer (especially July and August), so book early. If you can drive a manual (stick shift), you will have more choice and better rates. Most rental offices are near Korissia port.
From the Port to the Villa
From Korissia port to Koundouros is about a 30 minute drive. The road climbs and winds through the hills, with a stop in Ioulis (the island’s hilltop capital) on the way. A maps app is useful, as signage can be sparse on the smaller roads.
Around the Island
- Ioulis (Chora): the island’s capital, about 15 minutes from the port. Worth a wander through the whitewashed lanes.
- Koundouros: the bay where the villa sits, with a handful of tavernas and a sheltered beach.
- Pisses: a long sandy beach on the west coast, about 20 minutes from Koundouros.
- Otzias: a popular beach north of the port, a nice spot for an evening swim.
Kea rewards exploration. The roads are quiet and the island is easy to cover in a few days.
